Every year since 1977, the International Council Of Museums has organised International Museum Day, where the international museum community come together to celebrate that “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.” This year, International Museum Day on 16th May 2019 is focussing on museums as cultural hubs and the roles that museums play in their local community.

With that in mind, we at The Big Journey Company have been thinking about our own favourite museums, what it is that we like so much about them and what role they play in their local community. The unique and pleasing Larco Museum in Lima, Peru is housed in an 18th century Viceroy’s mansion and sits on the site of a pre-Columbian temple and is one of Sam’s favourites. This museum holds 3,000 years worth of gold and jewels, ceramics and pottery to catch the eye and interest of any visitor. Quite uniquely, visitors are allowed to go behind the scenes of this museum to explore for themselves some of the artefacts which are not on display. Not only can all students in the local community visit for free, but the Larco Museum also has education and enrichment programmes specifically aim at senior citizens, encouraging them to stay mentally and physically active whilst learning about the different roles and duties performed by ancient Peruvians. What a brilliant idea for the local community in Lima.

Tour Director Mark loves the Vatican Museum in the Vatican City, Rome. The Vatican Museum and its spectacular works of art really need no introduction, and Mark loves it because the whole building is filled with such a reverential atmosphere. Now he has visited several times, Mark’s favourite thing to do here is to watch the wonder on the faces of visitors as they admire the room. The Vatican museum is arguably a museum that provides a service to the worldwide community, as a religious and artistic space open to all. Did you know that the Vatican Museums also offer an education and training programme for young specialists in restoration techniques, in artistic and archaeological studies and other humanistic disciplines pertinent to the museum environment, training experts for the future?
We would love to hear about your own favourite museum. Where in the world is it? What is it you enjoy about that museum? Have you ever considered the role it plays in the local community? You can support your local museums further in that role - enjoy a museum today!
